The Siaw Nutmeg originates from the Sitaro Islands Regency located in North Sulawesi Province. The Siaw Nutmeg plant variety cultivated in this region is the Myristica Fragrans Houtt species, known for its pleasant aroma and taste.

Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of high quality nutmegs. Nutmeg is indigenous to Indonesia and has been cultivated on the islands of Siau from generation to generation. Farming and cultivating nutmeg has been the main activity of nearly 80% of the local community, who are also small-holders of nutmeg plantations. It is thought that the origin of this plant variety was introduced by traders from Banda Island of the Maluku Archipelago.

The Siaw Nutmeg producers association is called Lembaga Perlindungan Indikasi Geografis Pala Siau (LPIG-PALA SIAU). Members of the organisation consists of 4,590 nutmeg farmers and local household communities, nutmeg collectors, traders and exporters. Currently only 16 private sector companies are registered as members and they are traders. The Association are the official GI lodger of the Siaw Nutmeg.

Siaw Nutmeg is cultivated organically and without using any artificial fertilisers or pesticides.
The soil is very fertile due to volcanic ash released by Mount Karangetan. Additionally, the region has a very varied rain pattern, with most rainfall generally during November to February.
