Our planet is covered by 1365km³ of water, 97% of which is saltwater, and just 3% fresh. All this water—salt and fresh—is the basis of all life on this planet, for plants, animals and human beings.

No living being or society can survive without water. Yet today many people are denied this fundamental right. Three out of ten people don’t have access to safe water; our water resources are subject to various pressures, and our worldwide water security is at risk. This primary common good is under threat. Why? Because of our destruction of the ecosystems like the Amazon rainforest or the polar icecaps, because of our water privatization and water grabbing, because we contaminate our water resources through mining, agriculture, industry, construction and tourism. We need to change course, and imagine ourselves not as the “masters” of ecosystems, but as “guardians” and “restorers”,  with a mission to pass on a healthy planet to future generations.

We discuss water as a common good with Marianeli Torres Benavides, national coordinator for the defense of the mangrove ecosystem in Ecuador.

The Food Talks are new and freely accessible format of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto: ten minutes for our guests to explore their thoughts on the world we live in, and the future we want for it. The full Food Talk with Marianeli Torres Benavides will be released on October 11.
