We must embrace multiculturalism with joy. And we must understand that’s an irreversible choice.
Stella Jean speaks about fashion, but above all about an attitude that, in the fashion industry as in many other sectors that we should care about. And this attitude is one of openness, of curiosity, of multiculturalism as a powerful path forward for development.
For too long the West has used fashion to project an image of “civilization” in other countries – particularly in the Global South. The mission to “civilize” has been used to legitimize the suppression of innumerable existing civilizations. The influence on the diversity of aesthetic concepts around the world has been devastating. It’s time to take a different path.
Stella Jean is of mixed Italian-Haitian heritage, and represents an intersection between two apparently different cultures. A cultural distillation and cross-border dialog that the stylist recounts through fashion which goes beyond mere aesthetic concerns. The meeting of cultures, and the inclusivity it involves, is a necessary and irreversible choice. If there was ever a time when we were somehow separate from other cultures, such a mythical time has long passed: fusion is here, and fusion is forever.
