Food is a communal journey. The production of food involves us all: farmers, local communities, ourselves. When food is produced in a community context, the fruit of a collective effort, it is more nutritious, more delicious. A far cry from the commodities found on the market nowadays, that travel long distances in plastic containers.

Food is a communal journey, but it’s more than just feeding our bodies: it feeds our soul. If a food isn’t good, if it’s fruit of this communal journey, then our soul suffers and dies. Satish Kumar discusses his idea of food and its value, which must be understood from many points of view, including the spiritual satisfaction we derive from it.

Satish Kumar is an activist, ecologist and teacher, editor of Resurgence magazine and founder-director of Schumacher College, the International Center for Ecological Studies and the Small School. He has quietly made a big impact on the global agenda for change for over 50 years, having formerly been a Jain monk, a pacifist and an activist for nuclear disarmament.

The Food Talks are a new and freely accessible format of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto: ten minutes for our guests to explore their thoughts on the world we live in, and the future we want for it.
