Throughout the world of Slow Food initiatives that aim to improve access to healthy, quality food are springing up. In Uganda, for example, a lot of work has been done on a project called the Food Parliament.

In Uganda there are still numerous problems regarding access to healthy food, above all in the most fragile sections of the population. Vast areas of the country are dominated by monocultures like cane sugar, which are rapidly supplanting local crop cultures, damaging both biodiversity and the environment, as well as removing a source of income for the majority of the population. Initiatives like the Food Parliament aim to raise awareness of these themes and incite a collective realization of the importance of sustainable agriculture, local food and universal access to both.

John Kiwagalo has coordinated the advocacy project Food Systems Solution Platform Project, implemented by Slow Food Uganda, which aims to increase production and consumption of native vegetable varieties in rural and urban areas of Buikwe District, Uganda. He also coordinates three Earth Markets in Uganda, the Slow Food Youth Network Uganda and the Slow Food Youth Network Africa.

The Food Talks are a new and freely accessible format of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto: ten minutes for our guests to explore their thoughts on the world we live in, and the future we want for it.
